What is Sedation Dentistry/Laughing Gas?
Nitrous oxide is a gas and is commonly known as happy gas or laughing gas. Using nitrous oxide is a way to help reduce a patients pain and anxiety during dental treatment.
The gas is given through a small nosepiece and patient will be awake throughout the procedure. Patient usually recover quickly from the effects of the gas after their dental treatment is complete.
Who can have sedation at the Dentist?
Sedation is most appropriate for patients with a real fear or anxiety that is preventing them from going to dentist.
Indications-
- Have a low Pain Threshold
- Can’t Sit Still in the Dentist’s Chair
- Have Very Sensitive Teeth
- Have a Bad Gag Reflex
- Need a Large Amount of Dental work Completed
Some time children are given sedation if they are terrified of going to the dentist or refuse to cooperate during the visit. Nitrous oxide is safe in children.
Why Nitrous Oxide?.
- It is safe and effective method for sedation
- The laughing gas works quickly to relax patients and the effects wear off quickly by breathing pure oxygen through a mask.
How do You feel during sedation?
- Nitrous oxide sedation is given in the dental chair.
- Patient will breathe the sedation gas through a small nosepiece that sits on the nose. It does not cover the mouth.
- The Nitrous oxide makes patient feel sleepy and relaxed.
- Patient will feel dreamy and floaty, warm and have tingling in their hand and feet.
- They may be little forgetful and might not be able to remember the procedure afterwards.
- While giving the nitrous oxide, staff will monitor patient to ensure that they can still co-operate and follow verbal instructions.
- Local anaesthesia injection may also be given so that patient doesn’t feel pain.
- The dental treatment will be carried out.
